Spelling Bee

The benefits of spelling bees extend beyond language: Since children are required to spell words while on stage, children also develop self-confidence, communication and public speaking skills, and the ability to thrive under pressure.

Each year students in Grades 3 through 8 participate in the School Spelling Bee. Spelling word lists are distributed to children for each grade, and for a few weeks they study these words while having an opportunity to take part in several “mini” spelling bees within their classrooms. Finally, all students in each class participate in the School Spelling Bee on stage, in Chapel, and before the entire student body. The 1st place class champions and 2nd place class winners move on to perform at the Lutheran Regional Spelling Bee, competing against students from approximately 12 different Lutheran schools in the Southern California area. In this competition awards are given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
